FAQ

Questions About Chartering a Flight from Miami

How much does it cost to charter a flight from Miami?

A charter is priced for the whole aircraft, not per seat. The aircraft, the crew and the flight come as one figure, and what that figure covers is spelled out with the itinerary before any deposit. The total depends on the aircraft, the route and the day.

Is a charter cheaper than a scheduled flight?

No, and it is not meant to be. A scheduled seat costs less because someone else picked the time and you share the aircraft. A charter buys the aircraft: your departure, your return, your party only. On a day trip that usually means several more hours at the destination and no waiting in a terminal.

Which aircraft can I charter in Miami?

Seaplane, helicopter, small plane or private jet. A seaplane lands on water, so a sheltered bay or harbour works where there is no runway. A helicopter needs a cleared area rather than a strip. A small plane uses island airfields. A jet carries the most and can climb above much of the weather. We match the aircraft to the runway, the water and the number of seats.

Can we choose our own departure time?

Yes, within daylight and within what the crew is allowed to fly. That is the main thing a charter buys you. The hour is set when you confirm and can still be moved if your day changes, because the aircraft is not going anywhere else and there are no other passengers to inconvenience.

How far in advance should I book a charter flight?

About a week is comfortable. That gives the operator time to check the schedule and confirm times, and their reservations team goes through the flight details with you 24 to 48 hours before departure.

Where do the flights depart from?

From the airport or base closest to where you are staying: Miami Executive, Opa-locka Executive, Miami International, the Miami Seaplane Base, Watson Island Heliport, Fort Lauderdale Executive or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood. Tell us where you are staying and the quote comes back with the departure point already picked.

Do I need a passport to fly from Miami to the Bahamas?

Yes. Every passenger needs a valid passport, children included, and a driving licence will not do. The Bahamas is another country and a private aircraft does not change that. Names and passport numbers are filed from our side before you leave Florida. The first Bahamian landing has to be at an airport of entry such as Freeport, Bimini, Treasure Cay, Marsh Harbour, Nassau, North Eleuthera or Exuma, where the officer meets you at the aircraft. The Bahamian desks work from 09:00 to 17:30, and the way home is filed with United States Customs before you leave.

Can we do the Bahamas as a day trip from Miami?

Yes. The crossing takes a fraction of the day, and on a charter the aircraft waits for you, so the return hour is yours. Out in the morning, back in the evening, with both borders handled from our side. If you would rather stay a night, tell us when you enquire and the return is planned for that.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day?

Every aircraft handles weather differently. A seaplane needs water calm enough to land, a small plane and a jet use the runway, and a jet can climb above much of what grounds smaller aircraft. If conditions are below what is safe, the crew moves or cancels the flight, and you hear early enough to change the departure.

How much baggage can we take?

It is a question of weight, not of the number of bags, and it differs by aircraft. Floats carry less than wheels, and a jet carries the most. Say what is coming when you enquire, including golf clubs, dive gear, rods and anything with a battery, and the answer comes back with the quote.

Can I bring a pet on a charter flight?

Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. Tell us at the enquiry which animal and how heavy it is, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.

Will anyone else be on the aircraft?

No. A charter carries the people you name and nobody else. There is no seat assignment and no other party sharing the cabin.

How early do we need to arrive?

About thirty minutes before departure. There is no terminal queue to join at either end. You arrive, walk out to the aircraft, and the outbound border filing is already done from our side.

What is the difference between Velvet Air and the operator that flies me?

Velvet Air does not own or fly aircraft. The flight is operated by a licensed carrier. Because we do not fly ourselves, nothing steers you toward one operator, one aircraft or one price: we compare carriers for your route and put forward the best fit, and one person stays with your request from the first message until you land.
